Smith's Point Guided Walkabout
Jutting out into the channel between Madaket Harbor and Tuckernuck Island, Smith's Point alternates between including Esther's Island, so named when Hurricane Esther in September 1961 cleaved off half of Smith's Point from the rest of Nantucket. Although we islanders still refer to Esther's Island as Smith's Point, this temporary island has separated and reconnected to Nantucket several times over the decades. Solar Eclipse Week
On August 21, Nantucket will experience a solar eclipse. To celebrate this important celestial event, the Maria Mitchell Association will feature "Solar Eclipse Week" August 14 21. The week is packed with lectures and workshops to help people understand and appreciate this rare event. The week culminates with the big event on Monday, August 21 at an Eclipse Party at 4 Vestal Street from 1:30 to 4 pm. Throughout the week, the MMA will be giving out free solar glasses. These glasses will allow viewers an opportunity to safely view the eclipse. Glasses can be picked up at 4 Vestal Street.

Marine Ecology Field Trip
What sea creatures live in Nantucket Harbor? Find out as you help collect, identify and release fish, crabs, shrimp, and other marine life! The Harbor is filled with interesting animals that will amaze you in their shapes, colors, and habits. Presentation & Discussion: Enlisting Nantucket's Mice to Fight Ticks
A public presentation hosted by Nantucket Board of Health, MIT Professor Kevin Esvelt will discuss a plan to reduce the incidence of tick-borne disease on the island. The open, community-guided project aims to permanently break the ecological transmission cycle between white-footed mice and ticks by immunizing the local mouse population. This would dramatically reduce the number of infected ticks and consequently prevent new human infections. The presentation will detail the proposal, project status, timeline, and local governance plan, which is designed to ensure that the project is directed by the citizens of Nantucket at every stage. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session with Dr. Esvelt and colleagues. Sharing concerns, suggestions, and criticism is actively encouraged. Public Safety Building, 4 Fairgrounds Road.
